Distillerie Massenez: Crafting Excellence for 150 Years
Distillerie Massenez stands as a testament to 150 years of passion for taste and excellence.
Since its inception in 1870, this family-owned and operated company has become a reference of quality in the world of Eaux-de-Vie (fruit brandies), Crèmes, and Fruit Liqueurs. From the heart of the Val de Villé in Alsace, the distillery has reached the finest palaces, bars, and restaurants around the globe, delivering a taste of Alsace in every bottle.
A Legacy of Excellence
The history of Distillerie Massenez begins with Jean-Baptiste Massenez, a distiller in the Val de Villé, who unknowingly laid the foundation for a legacy. His son, Eugène Massenez, became a master distiller, gaining recognition in the trade. It was Gabriel-Eugène, affectionately known as Gaby, who truly propelled the Massenez brand onto the global stage, captivating the most discerning palates.
In 1913, the distillery made a significant mark with the introduction of Framboise Sauvage, the world's first wild raspberry Eau-de-Vie. This innovative spirit quickly gained popularity, even captivating the Queen of Sweden. This royal endorsement solidified Massenez's reputation, and the distillery became an official supplier to the Swedish court.
Culinary Partnerships and Global Expansion
The 1950s marked a period of expansion and recognition for the Massenez brand. Gabriel-Eugène Massenez's visionary approach led to partnerships with renowned Parisian brasseries and Michelin-starred chefs such as Verger, Troisgros, Lameloise, Haeberlin, Blanc, and Bocuse. These culinary giants became ambassadors for Massenez, helping to expand its reach, particularly in Asia, thanks to Bocuse's influence.
A Feminine Touch and Continued Growth
In 1982, the fourth generation, led by Manou Massenez, joined the distillery. Her feminine touch and commercial acumen helped expand the family brand to over 100 countries. Manou continued to elevate the Massenez brand in haute gastronomy, collaborating with great chefs like Robuchon, Ducasse, and Savoy, as well as emerging talents in mixology.
Modernization and Innovation
In 2010, Distillerie Massenez joined forces with Grandes Distilleries Peureux, renowned for their famous Griottines®. This partnership, led by Bernard Baud, brought a fresh vision to the brand, modernizing its image and expanding its presence in the cocktail world. Under the guidance of marketing director Elodie Naslin, Massenez introduced numerous innovations, including the Miss Massenez cocktail concentrates and the award-winning Garden Party® collection of vegetable-based distillates and liqueurs.
Celebrating 150 Years
In 2020, Distillerie Massenez celebrated its 150th anniversary, marked by the launch of the Dom Pacello Royal Orange® Liqueur. This milestone also coincided with Bernard Baud's 10th anniversary as president, a role he fulfills with a unique blend of artistic temperament and innovative spirit. His dual career as a conductor, composer, and trumpet player enriches his leadership style, fostering creativity and breaking conventions.
A Bright Future
With a strategy that blends innovation and tradition, Distillerie Massenez continues to assert its legitimacy in the world of spirits and contemporary mixology. Its loyal partnerships in gastronomy and its expanding export market ensure that the legacy of excellence and the spirit of innovation will continue to thrive for generations to come.
Distillerie Massenez's journey from a small distillery in Alsace to a global brand is a story of family dedication, innovative spirit, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Each bottle is not just a testament to their expertise but a celebration of a rich heritage that spans 150 years.
