Pieropan La Rocca Soave Classico 2023, 750ml
100% Garganega, from vines aged between 10 to 50 years, planted in marine-origin limestone soils. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 95 to 150 meters with a west exposure, yielding 60 hectoliters per hectare.
The grapes are hand-harvested in late October, often with a double pass to select the ripest grapes, which may have partial botrytis development. After destemming, the grapes are gently pressed using pneumatic presses under nitrogen saturation. The must ferments at low temperatures (14-18°C) in vitrified cement tanks. Once fermentation begins, it is transferred to wooden barrels to complete fermentation and age on fine lees.
Post-fermentation, the wine matures for about 15 months in French oak barrels (70-80%) and Slavonian oak barrels (20-30%). During this period, the wine remains in contact with fine lees, which are stirred periodically (bâtonnage) to enhance softness, body, and aromatic richness. After bottling, the wine rests for several months before release.
Tasting Note:
It has amazing aromas of pistachios, peaches, and dried mangoes. The wine is rich and full-bodied, but the freshness balances it out, making it feel less powerful. It's a great example of how a warmer year can produce a fantastic wine at this unique location.
