Springbank Local Barley 8 Years Old, 700ml

The annual showcase of terroir from Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, this lightly peated (around 7–10 ppm) single malt is distilled 2.5 times from heritage Bere barley grown exclusively at High Ranachan Farm on the Kintyre Peninsula, then malted on-site using traditional floor methods. Distilled July 2016, fully matured for eight years in a 50/50 vatting of ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry hogsheads. Bottled at cask strength 58.1% ABV. Released February 2025, limited to 13,500 bottles worldwide.

Tasting Note:

Aromas of cracked black pepper and cigar box tobacco, layered with fresh sage and leafy herbs, unfolding into sticky toffee apple, vanilla cream and a subtle coastal brine. With air, dried apricot, cinnamon and faint gorse florals emerge, grounding Bere barley’s rustic earthiness in sherry-driven fruit poise.

The palate is bold and luxuriously oily, opening with shortbread warmth and salted caramel from the bourbon, balanced by sherry-infused plum jam, herbal freshness and a refined peaty veil. Mid-palate builds with black pepper spice, graphite minerality and a whisper of woolly malt, all underpinned by Springbank’s signature linseed-oil waxiness.

The finish is long and persistent, fading through toffee glow, toasted nuts, orchard fruits and maritime salt laced with herbal sweetness.
A captivating evolution in the Local Barley series, more herbal and savoury than prior editions yet unmistakably Springbank. Superb now, with 8–12 years of graceful development ahead.
