Elegance and Intensity: Meursault Clos des Perrieres from Albert Grivault

Elegance and Intensity: Meursault Clos des Perrieres from Albert Grivault

Domaine Albert Grivault is a renowned wine estate with a rich history extending over 140 years. Founded by Albert Grivault in 1877, the estate initially focused on both wine and eaux de vie (spirits). Albert Grivault's vision for the estate included significant vineyard holdings in Meursault.

After Albert’s passing in 1909, the estate was managed by his widow and then his daughters Berthe Grivault and Mathilde Bardet. They successfully navigated through difficult times, including the 1929 economic crisis and the World Wars.

In 1980, Albert’s grandchildren—Michel Bardet, Marguerite, and Denise Chevignard—took over the estate. Michel Bardet has been managing the domaine since 1980, with his children Claire and Henri-Marc joining the team in 2004.

Location and Size:

Domaine Albert Grivault is located in Meursault, a prestigious village in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. The estate covers about 6 hectares of vineyards. Notably, it holds a monopole of the Clos des Perrières, a prized vineyard parcel bought by Albert Grivault in 1879.

The estate has downsized from its original 15 hectares, having sold some vineyards over the years, including 1 hectare of Clos de Vougeot in 1931. The domaine is known for its holdings in Meursault Perrières and Clos du Murger, and it also produces a Bourgogne Blanc, which is currently under consideration for upgrade to Meursault.

Wine Style and Production

The winemaking process involves aging the white wines in 20% new oak barrels, and the wines are typically bottled just before the next harvest. The red wine undergoes 18 months of aging and is vinified without stems to maintain its purity and character.

Legacy

Domaine Albert Grivault has maintained a strong reputation for producing high-quality Burgundy wines, especially its Meursault offerings. The estate’s long history and commitment to quality have solidified its place among Burgundy’s notable producers.

A testament to the estate's quality, Domaine Albert Grivault has had the iconic Lalou Bize-Leroy as a client for over 50 years, who continues to purchase bottles for her Maison Leroy business.
