Caol Ila 1976 "Private Collection" G&M, 700ml
The ‘Private Collection’ features a truly exceptional and unique range of greatly aged single malts from a mixture of celebrated, little-known, and now closed distilleries across Scotland.
Caol Ila 1976 was matured in a Refilled American Hogshead, and bottled from cask #8099, at 42.4% ABV in 2019.
Only 84 hand-blown crystal decanters have been produced.
Tucked away in a quiet cove just north of Port Askaig, Caol Ila is the largest malt whisky distillery on Islay. Originally founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson and operated today by Diageo, Caol Ila whiskies are famed for their distinctive Islay peaty smokiness. The distillery’s tall copper pot stills produce a distinctly light spirit that matures well in both Sherry and bourbon casks.
Nose: Fragrant salted lemon and beeswax polish accompany hints of leather. Subtle tropical fruit aromas develop alongside candied orange peel with gentle wisps of smoke.
Palate: Smooth; flavours of ripe honeydew melon and subtle spice are complemented by a soft menthol edge. Grapefruit notes emerge accompanied by flambéed banana and delicate smoky undertones.
Finish: Long and lingering with soft pepper notes on the finish.
