Domaine Baron Thenard Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" Rouge 2018, 750ml is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
100% Pinot Noir sourced from the estate's parcel within the Île des Vergelesses 1er Cru, widely considered the finest vineyard site in the Pernand-Vergelesses appellation. The east-southeast facing vineyard sits on a gentle mid-slope with sandy limestone and iron-rich clay soils mixed with flint debris. The vines are managed traditionally using seasonal plowing and natural ground cover. The fruit is fully destemmed and ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in century-old, open-top wooden vats. Maceration lasts approximately two weeks with twice-daily foot-treading for gentle extraction. The wine ages for 12 to 18 months in used French oak barrels with 5% new oak, resting undisturbed on its fine lees without systematic racking.
Tasting Note:
The wine reveals warmer aromas of dark plums, blueberries, licorice, and a hint of marzipan. The palate is generous and smooth, showing a broader core of dark berry fruit balanced by firm, structural tannins and a very high, persistent spine of acidity. The finish is robust and long, showing considerable fruit intensity and a lingering earthy element.
