Port Ellen 1979 is a single cask release from G&M Rare Old series, showcasing whiskies from closed distilleries. Distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2014 at 46% ABV, this Islay single malt was matured for 35 years in refill sherry casks. The distillery ceased production in 1983, making releases like this increasingly rare. This bottling was part of Lot RO/14/01 and yielded 610 bottles. It is non-chill filtered and bottled without added colour, reflecting Gordon & MacPhail’s commitment to preserving the character of historic distilleries.

Tasting Note:

On the nose, the whisky opens with maritime smoke, dried seaweed, and citrus peel, layered with medicinal notes and soft spice. The palate is oily and complex, showing brine, charcoal, lemon zest, and subtle sherry sweetness. The finish is long and smoky, with lingering iodine, oak, and dried herbs. This bottling offers a deep and evocative profile, capturing the essence of Port Ellen’s coastal and peated style.
