Benromach 2013 "Contrasts" Virgin Oak 10 Year Old, 700ml
Benromach Contrasts Virgin Oak 10 Year Old is a limited release from the distillery’s Contrasts series. Distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2024 at 46% ABV, it was matured exclusively in virgin American oak hogsheads, a departure from Benromach’s usual use of first-fill bourbon and sherry casks. The oak was air-dried, coopered in Speyside, and gently charred before filling. The whisky is non-chill filtered with natural colour. Benromach produces lightly peated single malts using spring water from the Chapelton Spring in the Romach Hills. The distillery employs direct-fired stills and manual controls to preserve its traditional Speyside character.
Tasting Note:
On the nose, the whisky opens with fragrant dried banana, freshly squeezed lemon, and soft vanilla fudge. The palate shows Seville orange zest, rich butterscotch, and smooth smoke. The finish is long and citrus-driven, with lingering notes of mature oak. This edition offers a spicier and more tropical profile, contrasting with Benromach’s typical sherried and smoky style.
