A New Chapter in Traisental: Markus Huber and Lenz Moser Team Up

Lenzmark is a joint venture founded in 2020 by Markus Huber and Lenz Moser V to create a modern, international-style Grüner Veltliner. Both founders bring deep family history to the project. The Huber family has made wine in the Traisental since 1648, and Markus took over his family's four-hectare estate in 2000, growing it into a leading regional winery known for organic farming and single-vineyard wines. The Moser family represents 15 generations of Austrian winemaking. His grandfather, Lenz Moser III, invented the high-trellising system in the 1930s that transformed European viticulture. While his brother Niki runs the Demeter-certified Weingut Sepp Moser in the Kremstal, Lenz Moser V worked globally in wine consulting and brand development before partnering with the Hubers. In this partnership, Markus and his brother Michael manage daily farming and winemaking in the Traisental, while Markus and Lenz handle the blending and stylistic direction.

At the heart of the project is Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s signature white grape variety. DNA profiling revealed that Grüner Veltliner is a natural cross between Traminer (Savagnin) and an obscure, nearly extinct vine discovered in Sankt Georgen am Leithagebirge, Burgenland.
Though its origins trace back centuries in Lower Austria, the variety expanded rapidly across the region during the 20th century. Its rise was largely driven by the adoption of modern trellising systems, which allowed the vigorous vine to produce balanced, high-quality yields. Grown today across more than 30% of Austria's total vineyard area, Grüner Veltliner has become internationally recognized for its natural acidity, distinctive white pepper spice, and rare ability to reflect micro-terroirs.

The wine is made from 120 hectares of vineyards spread across 15 select plots in Lower Austria, anchored by Markus Huber's estate holdings. The Traisental lies south of the Danube River, where cool northern air meets warm Pannonian winds. Steep hillside vineyards grow on ancient limestone rock covered by loess and loam soils, giving the wine firm acidity, strong structure, and mineral depth.

Farming follows strict organic standards, backed by Bio Austria and Sustainable Austria certifications. The team uses biodynamic composts and herbal teas alongside organic guidelines, completely avoiding synthetic chemicals. Careful canopy management protects the grapes from heat stress while keeping natural acidity intact.

In the cellar, winemaking keeps intervention low. Hand-harvested Grüner Veltliner grapes are destemmed and undergo an eight-hour cold soak to extract delicate aromas and texture. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using native and ambient yeasts. The wine rests on its fine lees in stainless steel to build a silky mouthfeel, balancing natural acidity and chalky minerality. A small portion ages in French oak barriques to add subtle spice and complexity without covering up the fruit.

Since launching with an initial 50,000 bottles, Lenzmark New Chapter has earned strong critical scores ranging from 93 to 95 points from James Suckling, establishing it as a key modern voice for Austrian wine.
