This blend of 55% Grenache, 24% Mataro, and 21% Shiraz is sourced from the Moppa, Ebenezer, and Kalimna sub-regions of the Barossa Valley. These areas are known for their dry-grown, old vines planted in hard, ironstone-rich soils. The fruit was hand-harvested and processed using Rockford’s traditional 19th-century equipment, including the Bagshaw crusher. Fermentation occurred in slate open-topped fermenters with manual pump-overs. The wine aged for 24 months in large, seasoned French and American oak vats and hogsheads, ensuring the wood influenced the texture without masking the fruit. After the ageing process, the wine was bottled and stayed in the cellar for 6 months before release.
Tasting Note:
The nose offers fragrant aromas of wild strawberry, dried herbs, and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied and savory, featuring layers of crunchy red fruit, plum, and earthy undertones. The finish is smooth and balanced, supported by fine, sandy tannins and a touch of spice.
